I was researching the ethics of assisted fertility treatments when I by chance came across something called NaProTECHNOLOGY . It sounded too good to be true in so many ways.
Dr. Tham continued to give me care when other doctors did not know how to treat me. She saved me and our baby.
IVF would have never worked for me; I would have lost the baby even if I had been able to conceive due to the low progesterone.
That meeting changed our lives! [Dr. Tham] was so kind. She was determined to find the root cause for our infertility.
We started trying for a baby when we were 25. Like most people, we thought pregnancy would occur easily and immediately. After six months of trying, we were overjoyed to have conceived a baby. Nothing could bring us down from that high. However, nine weeks into the pregnancy, we lost the baby. Our family doctor told us not to worry, and that everyone gets pregnant again in three months time. After trying to conceive for 12 additional months, we still hadn’t found success. I attempted to improve my overall health through healthy eating, reducing stress, and trying alternative modalities such as Chinese medicine, abdominal massage and osteopathy. When we discussed our frustrations with our family doctor, we were told “You are so young, but I’ll refer you on to a fertility specialist.”
We were referred to a typical fertility clinic in London. At the very first appointment, and despite not having any testing done, we were told we had a 1% chance of ever having children on our own. We were told it didn’t matter what my hormones were doing since we needed to do IVF. Ultimately, I had surgery to correct a blocked fallopian tube (as the other tube was said to be beyond repair) while we considered the prospect of undergoing IVF treatment.
We didn’t feel right about going through with IVF. The statistics say for every baby created through IVF, 7 die. We already knew the pain of losing one baby and we couldn’t bring ourselves to lose more. We recognized how taxing it will be on our relationship, on my body, and on our souls. Ethically, IVF did not seem right for us.
We then started to look into adoption. We completed the nine week course and most of the paperwork. Throughout the process, it just didn’t feel right, though. With the new legislation surrounding adoption in Canada, it would be near impossible for us to adopt domestically, and foreign adoption would be equally as difficult.
Several weeks later, I was researching the ethics of assisted fertility treatments when I by chance came across something called NaProTECHNOLOGY (which stands for Natural Procreative Technology). It sounded too good to be true in so many ways! Actual medical doctors who have chosen to specialize in NaPro diagnose and treat you. They treat infertility as a symptom, not a disease. Part of the diagnosis is done through charting using cervical mucus. Not only can pregnancies be achieved through this method of charting but they can also be avoided if you choose. In fact, this method of charting is more effective that the birth control pill!
We charted for three months in preparation for our appointment with Dr. Tham of FertilityCare Toronto. That meeting changed our lives! This wonderful woman was so kind. She was determined to find the root cause for our infertility. I had extensive testing done. The findings discovered many food allergies, alarmingly low progesterone levels, and shockingly, two completely open fallopian tubes! IVF would have never worked for me; I would have lost the baby even if I had been able to conceive due to the low progesterone.
One our first cycle treated under FertilityCare Toronto, I became pregnant! Our prayers had been answered after 3 years of trying and nearly giving-up! To support the pregnancy, Dr. Tham ordered progesterone injections for the remainder of the pregnancy.
I did not have an easy pregnancy. I had Hyperememsis Gravadarium. I lost over 10% of my weight from all the vomiting. Dr. Tham continued to give me care when other doctors did not know how to treat me. She saved me and our baby.
On December 16th 2012 we had our sweet baby girl. It was a surreal experience. It did not seem possible that after fighting for her for so long she was here. She would not be here if it had not been for NaProTECHNOLOGY and Dr. Tham.
If you are suffering from infertility please give NaProTECHNOLOGY and FertilityCare Toronto a chance. I guarantee you it will change your life. You will be in control of your fertility and know things about your body you never though you could. It will improve your marriage. But most importantly it will give you the child you so desperately want. We know how you feel; we were once there.
