This procedure, though, is costly in more ways than one to the couple. The physical effects of the treatment are profound, and the financial burden of the medication and procedure is horrendous. And yet, IVF is only a band aid treatment. There is another option. NaPro Technology, and the Creighton Model Fertility Care™ System, CrMS, is a more natural, more effective and less costly alternative to IVF.

In the past, infertility has been seen as a symptom rather than a disease. There is always an underlying cause, and treating the underlying cause was more effective than treating the infertility. In 1978, however, IVF caused a shift in treatment. The infertility began to be treated, rather than its cause, even though the cause can have an impact both on short and long term health, as well as causing infertility. Using IVF to treat infertility is putting a Band-Aid on the disease which caused the infertility.

NaPro Technology uses a woman’s natural biomarkers to help diagnose the underlying cause of her infertility. Using markers such as her mucus patterns and hormone levels can help practitioners determine what is causing her to have difficulty achieving pregnancy, and can also be used by the couple to find out when and if she is fertile. Using the information, the best treatment can be found for the underlying cause of the infertility, rather than simply putting a Band-Aid on the problem.

Women who are undergoing IVF are frequently taking drugs to suppress their cycles before taking others to stimulate the egg creation process to a massive degree. Then they must endure a series of extremely invasive procedures to harvest and then implant the eggs. The side effects of these drugs can be extremely uncomfortable, and the procedures make a woman feel distant and out of control of her own body. NaPro technology offers an alternative to these women. The system helps them, without disrupting their own natural cycles, and without the side effects.

IVF costs a lot. When the drugs are added to the costs of the medical procedures, a couple can spend tens of thousands of dollars per cycle, a cost which is frequently not covered by any insurance companies and, in Canada, not covered by healthcare, in most provinces. NaPro Technology offers a much cheaper alternative, which decreases some of the stresses felt by a couple suffering from infertility.

By treating the underlying cause of infertility, rather than having the strict goal of achieving pregnancy, NaPro technology becomes a more effective means of doing both. It is more effective than IVF at achieving pregnancy, and also helps a woman suffering with it to have better short and long term health. It is natural, so eliminates many of the physical side effects of the IVF procedure, and it is cheaper. Before agreeing to undergo IVF, take the time to see a local CrMS practitioner.

The emotions faced by those suffering from infertility are in constant flux. There is the excitement and hope as new treatments are started, as well as the fresh start at the beginning of each new cycle, and the incredible low when the cycle does not end in pregnancy. Also, there is a feeling among many couples that when they go to the doctor to address their infertility, the medical system takes over and they lose control of their bodies, which adds a sense of helplessness.

NaProTechnology offers these women another choice. The technology teaches a woman to use the natural biomarkers of her own body, such as her hormone levels and her mucus patterns, to determine when she is most fertile, and uses those biomarkers to help diagnose reasons why she might have trouble conceiving. The technology has better success rates than many more invasive procedures, and helps a woman to feel more in control, and in tune with her body.

Women using other treatments for infertility can undergo far more invasive procedures: hormone altering drugs intended to either suppress the natural functioning of the body or stimulate it far more than nature ever intended. Because these procedures cause a woman’s body to act in ways it was not meant to, all of them have physical consequences that have nothing to do with infertility, and only add to the stress and pain the woman is already experiencing. Because NaProTechnology uses a woman’s natural biomarkers, and works with them to help to achieve pregnancy, many of the side effects of the less natural methods can be avoided.

Many other methods of treating infertility come with hefty price tags, ranging from hundreds of dollars per treatment to tens of thousands. Financial worries can add exponentially to the burdens of a couple coping with the inability to achieve pregnancy, and be a seriously limiting factor in how many cycles they can make the attempt. CrMS and NaProTechnology is a much cheaper alternative to many of the more extreme procedures.

Infertility is never easy, no matter what choices a couple make in finding help to cope with it. But CrMS and NaProTechnology offer them a natural alternative. It uses the woman’s own biomarkers to help in planning and diagnosing problems, and teaches a couple how to use them, meaning less reliance on medical procedures and drugs. If you are suffering with infertility, and looking for an alternative strategy to the artificial means of treating infertility, it will be worthwhile to investigate NaPrTechnology

The Creighton Model System is an excellent means of natural birth regulation. When used to avoid pregnancy, the use-effectiveness is 96.8%. When used to achieve pregnancy the effectiveness is 76% in the very 1st cycle of use and 98% by the 6th cycle.

In addition, the development of SPICE* techniques improves couple relations and contributes to a very low divorce rate. Engaged couples should attend class 6 months prior to the wedding if the woman has not already done so.

CEIBA (pronounced as “SAY- BA”): Creighton Model Effectiveness, Intentions and Behaviors Assessment
The Creighton Model FertilityCare System (CrM) is the most standardized and medically developed method of natural family planning in the United States. It is based on the observations of biomarkers of the menstrual cycles, particularly vaginal bleeding and cervical fluid. It can be used in all reproductive situations including regular, irregular, or absent menstrual cycles.

The primary goal of the CEIBA study is to assess the effectiveness of the CrM to avoid pregnancy with newer statistical methods, and in the context of motivations, intentions and behaviors of the participating couples during its use. The study is observational in nature and does not involve any blood tests or medications. New users of the CrM at participating FertilityCare Centers throughout Canada and United States will be offered the opportunity to participate in this study.

Participants in the study will receive updates about the study and personalized feedback on their own observations of fertility biomarkers. This study will yield valuable insight into the effectiveness of CrM, which will be helpful for all the couples using the system and will provide important information to clinicians regarding its effectiveness.

For further information about the study, you can e-mail Executive Director Karen Hemingway at: fertilitycare@on.aibn.com

View Article in TRL Summer 2009 Newsletter

NaProTECHNOLOGY® (NPT) is a major breakthrough in monitoring, treating and maintaining a woman’s reproductive and gynecological health. NaProTECHNOLOGY® offers new hope for couples with infertility; it is nearly three times more successful than IVF, it doesn’t result in frozen embryos or early selective abortions. It is inexpensive and uses a step ladder approach to dealing with infertility. This new health science approaches women as whole persons and maintains the dignity of the couple. NPT works cooperatively with the body’s natural reproductive cycle. It doesn’t suppress the body’s reproductive system but instead enhances its function by thoroughly evaluating and treating the underlying problems.

The “per woman” pregnancy and family-building rates comparing NaProTECHNOLOGY and In Vitro Fertilization

NaProTECHNOLOGY® is provided by physicians who have been specifically trained in the system. It uses the Creighton Model FertilityCare System ™(CrMS) to help diagnose the underlying cause of infertility. Women are taught in the CrMS to record different biological markers such as menstrual and mucus flow. These observations are recorded on a daily basis by a woman in a standardized process. These recordings show the various hormonal events occurring in her cycle, which allows testing and blood work to be done at the correct part of the cycle to help identify abnormalities in her health. The Creighton Model FertilityCare Sytem ™ allows a woman to “unravel the mysteries of the menstrual cycle.”1 By learning to chart her cycle, a woman or couple are put in to the driver’s seat and are taught to not only understand how her body works but they are given the opportunity to be a proactive advocate in monitoring and maintaining her gynecological and reproductive health.

A women’s CrMS chart can reveal things such as infertility, high risk of miscarriage, low progesterone, abnormal bleeding, and much more. The effectiveness for achieving pregnancy for couples with infertility with the CrMS chart alone is 20-40% and with the CrMS and NaPro- TECHNOLOGY® it is up to 80%2. A study leasd by Dr. Phil Boyle in Ireland and published by JABFM in 2008 showed that of couples who had previously been trying for over a year to achieve pregnancy; after completing up to 24 months of treatment with NPT 52.8% had a live birth. Younger couples had a higher success rate and only 4.6% were twin births3. The average female age was 35.8 years, the mean duration of attempting to conceive was 5.6 years, 24% had a prior birth, and 33% had previously attempted treatment with assisted reproductive technology (ART). All couples were taught to identify the fertile days of the menstrual cycle with the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, and most received additional medical treatment, including clomiphene (75%). In life-table analysis, the cumulative proportion of first live births for those completing up to 24 months of NPT treatment was 52.8 per 100 couples. The crude proportion was 25.5. Younger couples and couples without previous ART attempts had higher rates of live birth. Among live births, there were 4.6% twin births.
